Aqualyx Fat Dissolving injections

What is Aqualyx?

  • Aqualyx is a injectable solution based on Deoxycholic acid, which occurs naturally in the body as a bile salt, where it emulsifies fat in the intestine as part of the digestive process.
  • Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient of fat dissolving injections or 'Flab Jabs'/Lipostabil as they were known in the past, which were mixed with phosphatidyl choline, but these are no longer widely available. Aqualyx is similar to Kybella, which is FDA approved in the USA.

How does Aqualyx work?

  • When Aqualyx is injected into the fatty layer under the skin, it 'dissolves' the membranes surrounding the fat cells (adipocytes). The contained fat leaks out  in between the cells, and is removed safely by the body through the normal processes. This is called 'adipocytolysis'
How do I know if I am suitable for Aqualyx?
  • Aqualyx is not a treatment for weight loss. It is for localised stubborn areas of fat. It does however work well when combined with appropriate exercise and weight reduction programmes. Your experienced Suffolk Medical Clinic practitioner will advise you whether you are a suitable candidate for treatment.

What areas of the body can be treated with Aqualyx?

Aqualyx is excellent at removing stubborn areas of unwanted fat, such as:

-Double chins

-Love handles

-Muffin tops (lower tummy fat pads/'Mummy Tummy')

-Outer thigh fat pads

-Thoracic rolls ('Back Boobs')

-'Saddles Bags'

-'Bat wings'

-Inner thigh fat pads

Is it painful to have done?

  • Not really-The actual procedure is only mildly uncomfortable, as the product contains local anaesthetic. The product is delivered in a 'fan' like pattern through 2 small puncture sites, one on each side of the treatment area.

How many treatments will I need?

  • The face and upper arms may need between 2 and 4 treatments.
  • The rest of the boy may need between 3 and 6 treatments.
  • They are usually performed every 3-4 weeks.

Are there any side-effects?

  • Common side effects include redness, bruising, swelling and discomfort/pain which usually resolve within 1-2 weeks. This can be most obvious with treatments around the face. Lumpiness can also occur in the treatment area, which usually resolves as the fat is absorbed, and the inflammation settles. Less common side effects are listed in the consent form.

Is there anyone who cannot have Aqualyx? Yes, namely:

  • Patients who are pregnant or breast feeding
  • Patients who are allergic to any of the injection constituents
  • Patients with a history of severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis
  • Patients with acute or chronic skin disease in the area to be treated
  • Patients with some other systemic diseases, or who are generally unwell
  • Diabetic patients need to be assessed carefully
How much does it cost?
  • Double chin-£450 per treatment
  • Other areas start at £350 per area per treatment
